Can't Connect? Run This Checklist
In order, each step rules out a layer. Most "server issues" die at step 3 or 4.
Confirm it's actually the servers
Check Rockstar's Service Status and your platform's network status. If either shows an outage, nothing on your end will fix it. Wait it out.
Full restart, in order
Close the game completely, then restart the console (full power cycle, not rest mode). Stale sessions cause most phantom connection errors.
Test your connection
Run the console's built-in network test. If NAT type shows Strict, that's your matchmaking problem, not Rockstar's servers.
Power-cycle the router
Unplug for 30 seconds. If issues persist, switch DNS to 1.1.1.1 / 8.8.8.8 in the console's network settings, the most common fix that actually works.
Go wired if you can
Ethernet removes Wi-Fi interference from the equation entirely, and worth it for launch week even if you switch back later.
Try off-peak hours
During launch week, evening US hours will be brutal. Early morning sessions are the reliable workaround while Rockstar scales capacity.
What Launch Week Will Look Like
History is blunt about this. When GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013, servers buckled for roughly two weeks (login queues, lost characters, failed sessions) before Rockstar stabilized it into the biggest-earning game mode ever made. Red Dead Online's 2018 beta had a smoother but still bumpy start.
GTA 6 will be the biggest entertainment launch in history, so plan for turbulence: play the story first (you'll want to anyway), try Online during off-peak hours, and run the checklist above before assuming the problem is on your end.
Server Status FAQ
Is GTA 6 Online down right now?
GTA 6 Online has not launched yet. GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026, and the online mode is expected at launch or shortly after. Once live, this page tracks outages alongside Rockstar's official service status.
How do I check if GTA 6 Online servers are down?
Check Rockstar's official Service Status page first, then Rockstar Support on X for acknowledgments. Also verify PlayStation Network or Xbox Live status, since platform outages are often mistaken for Rockstar server problems.
Will GTA 6 Online servers struggle at launch?
Almost certainly at first. GTA Online's 2013 launch had two weeks of severe server issues, and GTA 6 will be the biggest entertainment launch in history. Expect login queues and disconnects in the first days, and expect Rockstar to stabilize quickly.
What can I do if I can't connect to GTA 6 Online?
Restart the game and console, test your internet connection, check whether Rockstar or your platform is reporting an outage, and try again during off-peak hours. If servers are up but you still can't connect, restarting your router and switching DNS are the most common fixes.
