The GTA 6 Map: Every Confirmed Location, How Big It Really Is, and What the Community Has Built
Seven months out from launch, Rockstar has still not released an official map. No square kilometres, no labelled overview, no "here is what Leonida looks like from above." What we do have is two trailers worth of aerial footage, a set of official location descriptions on Rockstar's website, four years of community detective work โ and, as of this week, a dramatically updated version of the GTA 6 Community Mapping Project that is the closest thing to an actual map the world has seen.
This is everything we know about where GTA 6 takes place, how big it is, and what you will actually be navigating come November 19.
The Setting: The State of Leonida
GTA 6 does not just take place in Vice City. It takes place in the entire fictional state of Leonida โ Rockstar's version of Florida โ with Vice City (a reimagined Miami) serving as the urban centrepiece of a much larger geography.
This is a meaningful shift from GTA 5, which was set in Los Santos and the surrounding countryside of Blaine County. GTA 6's Leonida is a full state, modelled on the actual geography of Florida, with distinct regions based on real Florida environments. Rockstar's own official descriptions confirm six named areas:
Vice City โ the neon-soaked coastal metropolis at the heart of the game. Described by Rockstar as "the sun and fun capital of America." The modern version of Vice City is built around Ocean Beach (South Beach), Little Cuba (Little Havana), Little Haiti, the Venetian Islands, and the Port โ the "cruise ship capital of the world" in the game's fiction. It is larger, denser, and more vertically complex than the 2002 Vice City, updated for contemporary Miami's skyline and culture.
Grassrivers โ Rockstar's version of the Everglades. A vast wetland environment with swamps, wildlife, and waterways. The trailers have shown airboats, alligators, and the specific visual texture of Florida's interior. This is not decorative countryside the way Blaine County sometimes felt โ Grassrivers appears to be a playable environment with its own criminal ecosystem and story relevance.
Leonida Keys โ based on the Florida Keys. A chain of islands extending into open water. Rockstar's character bio for Jason Duval notes he "ended up in the Keys," making this area directly story-relevant rather than optional geography. The Keys suggest boat travel, underwater exploration, and a distinct visual identity from the urban core.
Ambrosia โ an inland county. Rockstar describes it as featuring "American industry and old school values" where "the Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, while the local biker gang provides almost everything else." This is the game's answer to rural Florida โ think Clewiston or the agricultural interior. Heavy industry, bikers, and a very different tone to Vice City's coastal energy.
Mount Kalaga National Park โ a mountainous region confirmed via official screenshots. Florida is famously flat, so Kalaga represents artistic licence โ Rockstar's acknowledgement that a completely flat map would be visually monotonous. The screenshots show forested mountain terrain that creates a visual and topographical contrast to everything else in Leonida.
Port Gellhorn โ an industrial waterfront city described by Rockstar as "Leonida's forgotten coast." Cheap motels, closed attractions, empty strip malls. It is "fuelled by malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks." Rockstar's location writing is worth quoting directly: "Jump on a dirt bike and hold onto your wallet." Port Gellhorn is on the western coast, modelled loosely on Panama City Beach โ a former tourist destination that has seen better days.
The Community Mapping Project: Four Years of Work
In September 2022, before Rockstar had officially confirmed a single detail about the game, a community effort began building a map from leaked footage. The GTA 6 Community Mapping Project has been running ever since, using every available data point โ trailer frames, leaked development footage, official screenshots, coordinate data extracted from video metadata, and comparisons to actual Florida geography โ to construct the most accurate possible recreation of Leonida.
This week, Reddit user EliteFireBox posted a side-by-side comparison: the original September 2022 map versus the updated April 2026 version. The difference is significant. The 2022 version was a rough outline โ the broad shape of the state with some guessed locations. The 2026 version is a detailed geographical map showing motorways, town placements, county boundaries, the central lake (Lake Leonida, based on Lake Okeechobee), and the relative positions of every major confirmed location.
The reaction from the community was immediate. "Having the bay to the left with the town surrounding it is gonna hit so hard," one commenter wrote. The map makes clear just how large and varied the landscape is โ not a single city with countryside bolted on, but a genuinely state-scale geography with multiple distinct regions each with their own character.

How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?
Rockstar has not released official dimensions. What we have is community measurement using trailer coordinates and the mapping project's best estimates โ and the consensus is consistent enough across multiple independent analyses to be taken seriously.
The working estimate is that Leonida is approximately 2.5 times the size of GTA 5's map by landmass. If GTA 5's Los Santos and Blaine County combined covers roughly 75 square kilometres, Leonida is estimated at around 180โ200 square kilometres.
For reference, GTA Forum user lxr ran a measurement against the community-constructed map and arrived at approximately 125 square kilometres for the landmass alone โ before accounting for the ocean, water areas, and any underwater zones. Other estimates running the same methodology from different angles have landed in the 125โ200 range.
Community timing tests โ measuring how long it takes to traverse the map at fixed speeds โ estimate that crossing Leonida end-to-end takes approximately six minutes and ten seconds by car, compared to GTA 5's three minutes thirty seconds. That is not a scientific measurement, but as a feel metric it captures the difference: GTA 6 is not slightly bigger than GTA 5. It is a different scale of proposition.
| Estimated Size | Estimated Drive Time | |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 (Los Santos + Blaine County) | ~75 kmยฒ | ~3 min 30 sec |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | ~75 kmยฒ | ~6 min (on horseback) |
| GTA 6 (Leonida) | ~180โ200 kmยฒ | ~6 min 10 sec (by car) |
The density distinction matters as much as the size. The community mapping project and the official screenshots both suggest that GTA 6's map is not just larger but more filled โ more enterable buildings, more populated areas, fewer empty stretches. Rockstar's reported figure of 700+ enterable interiors points to a world where the square footage is actually usable rather than largely decorative.
The Rumoured Second State: Gloriana
One detail that has circulated persistently in the community โ not confirmed by Rockstar but appearing consistently enough to mention โ is evidence of a second state in the game's world.
Fans spotted what appears to be "Gloriana State" on in-game licence plates visible in trailer footage. Gloriana would be based on Georgia, placing it to the north of Leonida. If accurate, this would suggest either that GTA 6's playable world extends north of Florida into Georgia-inspired territory, or that Gloriana represents a post-launch expansion area โ new regions added after release the way Rockstar has added to GTA Online over the years.
Rockstar has not mentioned Gloriana. It remains speculative, but it is speculative based on evidence rather than pure wishful thinking.
What the Map Actually Means for Gameplay
Size is one thing. What Rockstar does with it is another.
The 700+ enterable interiors number is the detail that changes the character of the map most significantly. GTA 5 had many beautiful-looking buildings you could not enter. GTA 6's Leonida appears to be built differently โ shops, restaurants, hotels, gyms, banks, government buildings, and more are reportedly accessible. That transforms the map from a backdrop you drive through into a space you actually inhabit.
The regional diversity also suggests mechanically different gameplay across different areas. Vice City's urban density favours foot chases, vehicle combat in traffic, and the kind of dense environment that produced GTA 5's best set-pieces. The Grassrivers swamps suggest airboats, wildlife, and the slower, heavier atmosphere that made RDR2's wilderness sections distinct. The Keys suggest water-based missions. Ambrosia and Port Gellhorn suggest rural criminality with a different texture to the coastal city.
A map built across this many different biomes โ coastal city, swampland, archipelago, mountain park, industrial coast โ is not just bigger. It is more varied than anything Rockstar has built before, which is the more important quality.
When Will Rockstar Show the Official Map?
Most likely during the Summer 2026 marketing campaign. Take-Two confirmed that GTA 6's launch marketing begins this summer, and Trailer 3 โ expected between May and July โ will almost certainly include the first extended look at Leonida's geography. Rockstar's website already hosts official descriptions and screenshots for each named location, which reads like the groundwork for a full official map reveal.
The community mapping project has spent four years converging on what Leonida looks like. In a few months, Rockstar will tell us how close they got.
GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. All map size estimates are community-derived from trailer analysis and the GTA 6 Community Mapping Project. Official dimensions have not been confirmed by Rockstar Games.
